According to legend, the seigaiha pattern originated in the Sassanid Empire and were widely used in Egypt, Iran and other places. During the Asuka period (592-710), it spread to Japan from China via the Silk Road. The appearance of seigaiha pattern has been recorded as early as "The Tale of Genji", and it is also one of the famous songs in ceremonial music. It is composed of slices of semicircles arranged like fish scales, just like repeated and stable waves on the sea, exuding a sense of stability and harmony. It has the meaning of peace and tranquility in Japanese culture, and it is regarded by the Japanese as auspicious patterns.
