This terminology stands for coating translucent layers of raw lacquer after the main urushi work for the solid color is completed. The purpose of tamenuri is to create the depth of urushi design as the translucent layers are visually penetrable.For instance, it is called "aka tamenuri" when the main color is red (or aka in Japanese) while it looks subdued charmingly under the subtle shade of translucent lacquering.
